Virtualbox snapshot9/28/2023 ![]() ![]() If you’re running the virtualization in full screen, pressing the Host key (the right CTRL by default) will open the lower pull-out menu where you can go to Machine > Take snapsnot. At any moment and depending on the status of your window, you can take a snapshot. In this case, we’re going to open our virtualized Linux Elementary OS distro as we would normally. From VirtualBox, start any of the virtual drives you’ve set up.Next I’ll explain how to create these restore points. This is not a system-restore method or anything of the sort this system is in fact much better and more practical, saving the exact state of your virtual machine, including not just the programs running at that moment but also the position of the windows and any files created. Thanks to the option to take snapshots, you can simply revert your virtual machine to its status a moment prior to when you installed the program.Ĭareful, though. You set up your virtualization and after installing the new program you realize that, in fact, it negatively affects your computer’s performance or slips in some sort of malware behind the scenes. Suppose you want to install a program but you’re not sure how reliable it is, and thus you turn to a virtualized version of Windows on VirtualBox to test the software in a controlled environment. ![]() But what many don’t consider is the useful possibility of creating snapshots to memorize several different statuses for the same machine that can be run in just a few seconds. ![]() VirtualBox is perhaps the best alternative to create hard drives to launch one operating system inside another without affecting the home machine. This is a security mechanism: you can ask the person to say the words to you, and if they match, you can be sure that the person you’re speaking with (or at least the device they are using) is the one you called. When you start a voice call, two random words will be presented on your screen and that of the person (Signal user) whom you’re speaking with. Voice calls on Signal proved to be fantastic, overall I didn’t have one bad experience related to it – both on a WLAN or 3G. Voice quality is often sub par, especially when dialing and receiving calls when not connected to a wireless network. Voice communication: This is usually one of the problematic aspects of this type of apps. Textual communication: There is nothing special to talk about here you’ll get the same look and feel as sending text or photos via iMessages. This is a privacy focused app, so don’t expect those annoying “ (Contact name) joined Signal” messages. By opening the contacts, you’ll clearly see which of your peers have Signal installed. The user interface is simple, elegant, and has an overall iMessage feel to it. While I personally hate giving any application access to my contacts, in the past couple of years this has become standard practice. I tried refusing, but the app simply presented me with a note saying that Signal doesn’t store any contact data on their servers and that I have to give it the required permissions in order to be able to use it. So, after you get the app from the App Store, you’ll need to verify your phone number.Īfter the successful verification, you’ll need to give Signal access to your contacts. These are tools that are considered best practice by child development professionals and they are tools you can start using today. ![]() Along with an overview of the philosophy of positive guidance, I share ten tools that will help guide child behavior in positive ways. Using time outs appropriately is just one of the topics addressed. We don’t get bogged down in semantics and linguistic gymnastics, because it isn’t about terms, it’s about tools. I’m getting ready to start my third session of my Parenting with Positive Guidance Ecourse, in fact, the first class “goes live” today! The whole course is about principles, tools, and real world applications. That doesn’t come from isolation or shame, it comes from practice and supported learning. It’s about giving kids the opportunities and the tools to be successful. ![]() It’s about the level of connection and support. If you’d like to use that time-out with your child, I dare say you’d get the blessing of even the biggest opponents of time outs. And then they send them out again, watching closely to see if the new plan works. They look them right in the eye and let them know what’s not working and what they need to see instead. They give them a chance to calm down and catch their breath. They call time outs to get their players out of a situation that has gotten out of control. You would never expect to see the coach of a professional basketball team call a time out when his team is performing poorly, only to shout “NO”, give stern looks, and then walk away from them as they waste away the remainder of the time out clock sitting in silence. Similarly, if you’d like to use time out as a tool, in an effective way and with proper technique, by all means you can call it time out and not get the stink-eye from me or anyone else.Īs I’ve mentioned before, time outs are for coaching, as the term implies. It isn’t the name that prevents it from working, it’s the technique. But if the technique is the same, it doesn’t really matter. We can use it inappropriately, shunning and shaming children, hoping to magically change their behavior simply by changing their location. You can call a Phillip’s screwdriver an X-head if you like, as long as you know how to use it. Names are merely for convenience in referencing. What I find interesting is that our focus has been on the name, and not so much on the practice. And others could maybe use some serious tweaking. Many are being used in exactly the right way. I’m not saying all these things are wrong. Then they explain to me what they do instead - essentially time outs by another name. I’ve observed in classrooms where teachers proudly tell me they don’t use time outs. What’s interesting to me, however, is when I come across parents and child care centers who are aware of the more current knowledge on time out and so they sort of, kind of change. With time and popularity of a practice comes greater research and scrutiny and we’ve now learned that time outs may not be working and, in fact, may be counter-productive, engendering greater feelings of social isolation and rejection in children who most need to build social connections and competency. From its initial burst onto the scene it was a positive alternative to corporeal punishment. ![]() Ubuntu vmware player9/28/2023 ![]() ![]() So dig out your dusty Adibou disks, get a ScummVM daily development build, and start collecting sweets while completing math and reading exercises! But before they go into the barrel, they are “mellowed” (or filtered or “leached”) by passing through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal (and a wool blanket, which folks usually forget). The heart of the question is the Lincoln County Process, the essential, required-by-Tennessee-law difference. A tactic that has helped game devs is to compare Unity vs Unreal engines and decide which is best for their game. There are simpler, quicker engines out there for those that want to make a simpler, quicker game. It has a high ceiling of capabilities that can come with a steep learning curve. From artistic and narrative-heavy games like Cuphead and Hollow Knight to the competitive, mechanics-driven gameplay of Escape from Tarkov, Unity can handle it all.įor one, Unity may prove too complicated for what some developers need. It can export to many platforms and is easy to get up and running. Pros and ConsĪs mentioned, Unity is beginner-friendly, highly capable, and features a ton of tools with an expansive community to boot. Meaning that if you aren’t an artist yourself, you can probably find art that fits your needs. Thousands of Unity-ready 3D models, audio clips, and code snippets are hosted for sale or for free. The Unity Asset Store is also a great resource for developers. Unity CEO John Riccitiello stated that “half of all games are built on Unity,” So if you get stuck, chances are there’s already a post somewhere with the solution you’re looking for. Within these topics are thousands upon thousands of posts on troubleshooting, speculation, experimentation, and more. Unity has dozens of boards where developers discuss anything under the sun, from topics as general as “2D Games” to ones as specific as the “High Definition Render Pipeline”. The benefit of a huge user base is a huge forum. Unity’s positive history among academics often secures its placement as the first engine students use, and its intuitiveness, support, and reputation keep them from switching to another engine down the road. Malcolm MacDonald, an independent Unity developer, mentioned that Unity being free and having a proven track record on large games was the deciding factor for his choosing it. When reached for comment, student game developers confirmed their preference for Unity over other engines. However, many schools teach game development with Unity, and the amount of tutorials, guides, help forums, documentation and discussion about the engine is enough to turn a budding developer into a well rounded professional in no time. ![]() The engine won’t do everything for you, and you can only get so far by following tutorials and copying code. “Easy to learn” is a subjective measurement, but the general consensus from experts is that Unity is precisely that. Since the tools aren’t native to Unity’s environment, your mileage with them may vary. This may be a necessity depending on your work pipeline, as your coworkers or contractors may need these tools on their end. If you’re looking to do specialized work with tools like FMOD or Wwise, Unity allows you to easily integrate them. ![]() Unity offers many in-engine extras for animation and audio. Boo is inspired by Python’s syntax, but developers have mixed feelings about Boo, and it isn’t very well supported compared to C#. C# is by far the most popular of the three, so you’ll have the best luck finding tutorials and support if you stick with C#. Its built-in scripting languages include C#, UnityScript, and Boo. Unity is the engine of choice if one of your main concerns is easily porting your game to a variety of platforms. It can compile for all major desktop operating systems, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, WebGL, and more. Unity can export games to an impressive 25 platforms. This has led to a thriving community of Unity creators who are eager to share their work and make game development easier for everyone. If you do write code, you can choose to make any variables in your script public, allowing other people to access and change them. Unity also has a powerful and customizable UI that carries a ton of functionality, letting you make changes to your game without coding. Right out of the box, and with surprisingly little effort, anyone can create first-person shooters, RPGs, platformers, and more. Unity supports 2D and3D game development with a robust physics and collision system. Unity offers a plethora of professional-grade tools and APIs for implementing graphics, audio, networking, physics, GUIs, and scripting: everything you would expect from such a popular engine.
